Barksdale’s Mississippians are depicted preparing to receive the oncoming Union soldiers who have landed on the western shore of the Rappahannock. They will resort to using cover when they engage the onrushing Union soldiers. (Martin Pegler)

Defending Fredericksburg for the Confederacy, Brigadier General William Barksdale’s Mississippi Brigade would keep the Union forces at bay for over 11 hours. Barksdale’s first military experience came during the Mexican–American War. After Mississippi seceded on January 9, 1861, Barksdale resigned and accepted the position of adjutant general with the rank of brigadier general in the Mississippi Militia. On May 1, 1861 he accepted the colonelcy of the 13th Mississippi Infantry, a regiment which faced the 1st Andrew Sharpshooters at Edward’s Ferry. According to Captain Saunders of the 1st Andrew Sharpshooters, Barksdale’s regiment was routed, but in reality Barksdale had been ordered to make a demonstration before falling back to support the main Confederate attack at Ball’s Bluff. At Malvern Hill (July 1, 1862), Barksdale assumed command of Brigadier General Richard Griffin’s brigade and was promoted to brigadier general on August 12, 1862. His brigade helped capture Harper’s Ferry for the Confederacy by storming Maryland Heights on September 12, 1862. The brigade’s next battle was at Antietam/Sharpsburg, where Barksdale’s men fought in the West Woods against Major General John Sedgwick’s 2d Division in Major General Edwin V. Sumner’s II Corps.
